Civic Holiday = Pay Day! 08-02-2010

Today was a holiday Monday for us here in Ontario, Canada - Civic Holiday. My morning actually started off early, I was wide awake at 5am - EEEK!! So I got up and did some computer work until Bob woke up at 8:30am and after breakfast Bob played with his G-Scale Train and I painted up some Muskoka chairs and then it got hot, so we headed to Mom's pool for a dip, came home, had a 2-hour nap, got up had some supper and then it hit me, we had not metal detected in a looooooooooooooong time. I asked Bob to call up Cousin Steve and see what he was up to. His house always seemed to pay out nicely with older coins. Bob got Steve on the phone and he said we could come up.

Once we got there, Steve showed us a "cheaper" metal detector he had picked up and try out. No pinpointing feature, it didn't tell you how deep an item was and beeped at everything.

At first we found a bottle cap, a gun shell casing, a nail. Steve found some nails. I walked over to Steve and detected one of his holes to see what reading I was getting on something he got a solid hit on. The numbers came up negative and iron. I found a 70 reading nearby and marked it with a stick for him.

It ended up being a 1969 penny which appeared to have been used for target practice. Steve figures it was a handgun which was used on it. This penny was found near the side of the house about 2 inches down. He doesn't own one and no one in his family who lived in the house previously owned one. Very strange.

Bob and I had an awesome time hunting.

We first found bunch of firsts for us a 1899 Indian Head Penny, a 1918 US Dime, Canadian 1903 Penny, Canadian 1917 King George Nickel (such a cutie small thing). We also found what appears to be some sort of brooch or clip-on earring with a diamond looking stone in the center, 1951 US Penny, 1964 US penny, 1973 Canadian Penny, 1977 Canadian Penny and a 1982 Canadian Penny.

Overall, a totally excellent hunt and I think we only did hunt for 1 hour and 1/2.

We had been here before previously two or three times and have always found old unique items. We hope it keeps paying off for us, it is so fun searching Steve & Nadine's yard. :o)

YING YANG in the School Yard - 03-22-09

After a lazy day of doing nothing (bad us, as we were suppose to be cleaning) the phone rang after lunch as Steve wanted to go detecting when Nadine arrived home from work after 5:00pm. They came over to our house after 5pm and we headed out to a school yard. Bob and I had been there before and this was Steve & Nadine's first time.

Since it was later in the day and the sun was setting, it was getting really cold.

Steve & Nadine headed off to the playground equipment while Bob and I headed off to the baseball diamond where we had found a ring a year before. Junk Junk Junk all around - pop tabs, foil, everything but money. lol


Finally we scored a penny and then some dimes and a few more pennies. We finally found a Ying Yang charm. 36 cents in change was our total.


It was getting colder and dark. We looked up to see Steve alone. Where on earth was Nadine?


We headed over to Steve to find out poor Nadine was freezing and had gone to sit in their truck.

We compared our finds.


They had found Dinky Car Wheels, the end of a pencil, bret, paper clip, zipper pieces, a round piece of metal and 25 cents in change.

We ended our evening by picking up Subs at Subway and Coffee's at Tim Horton's and coming back to our house to hang out and watch TV.

Metal Detecting Day - 03-15-09

This morning it was decided that we would go detecting with Steve & Nadine. The phone call came around 8:30am to get up and meet them around 9:00am at a local Tim Hortons. We beat them there and discussed our plan of action. First, we decided to go and take some photo's of a local historical landmark that had caught fire on March 10th before they had a chance to tear it down.

We then decided where to go and hunt and the race was on. Who would find more, Steve & Nadine or myself and Bob?

The two teams split up and we started our search.

As Bob and I looked around we spotted holes that had been dug, plugs removed but not placed back into the holes. :o( Not a good sign, that means someone had been here before us. The plugs were frozen in place, so it had been in the previous days. What a disaster of divets. We hoped that if any local people came walking about we would not be blamed for the destruction because we are always very careful to try and cut our plugs as clean as possible and when we are done with the holes to place them back into the ground.

We began our search.

We came up with a lot of pennies approx. 3 inches down and a lot of surface pop tabs.

Steve & Nadine started their search.

Their total was $3.68 and also found bottle caps, pull tabs, a Mascarra Brush & bent fork along with a cool little cross charm.

Looking forward to our next hunt with them sometime!! :o)

It's Getting Warmer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ohhhhhhhhh, finally the snow has left and the warmer temperatures are approaching. WE HOPE!

Looking forward to adding new adventures this year!!!!

We're hoping that Steve & Nadine will let us help them to detect their yard again in hopes of finding more hidden 1800's / early 1900's coins.
