Cool Morning but the day brought some neat finds!

The morning started out overcast and cool and looked as if the skies were threatening to rain. We had slept in, it was almost 9am and I got up and emailed Steve & Nadine to see if they were up and ready to go detecting. The plan was to detect this morning as Steve & Nadine had a race to watch on TV. I never received a reply, but Bob received a phone call. We called my mom and once we had everyone's Timmies orders we headed out to pick up coffees and donuts and meet up at Steve & Nadine's house.

Steve had gained permission to detect on another piece of property close to where he and Nadine live. There use to be an older house on the property we were told and then this one was built. The age of this house was approx. 100 years old. Unfortunately a few months back this house had a fire so no one is living there now (bad for them, but good for us).

We arrived at Steve's a little after 10am, my mom was there, but Nadine was no where in sight. She apparently had left early that morning to go buy some items and deliver them to her brother who was meeting her half way from his house. She would be by later.

As I said, it was a cool morning, so we piled into Mom's van and had a nice chat while we drank our morning coffees and ate donuts "Breakfast of Champions".

Bob needed to use the facilities at Steve's and Steve, Mom and I walked over to the house and walked around to see what we had and where good detecting locations were.

I was really hoping to find an 1800 coin since we had found quite a few of them at Steve & Nadine's house last year which is basically across the street from this place.

Bob showed up shortly after and Mom suggested we try an old sidewalk near the house. She went to help Steve dig while Bob and I started our search. We found a penny (not old) and a nickle and then basically nothing but garbage. We kept checking in with Mom and Steve, same thing, nothing but garbage. We rounded the front of the house

We found nothing but garage. We continued around the side, still nothing. Down and up a hill, near a fire pit, garbage garbage garbage. Nadine showed up and started to hunt with us.

Steve decided to head for home, he needed to get a lawnmower going and get ready to see his race. Nadine and Mom stayed on to detect together and Bob and I rounded the house yet again, this time we decided to detect near an old dog house. Here's what we found!

Three bells & one weird piece of metal



Two dog tags, one dated 1941 Louth 63 & another Town of Lincoln 1975 819



A funky button, on the back is says Browning King Co. We think the design on the front is three letters DSC or maybe DSG ?
(Just looked up the company info: BROWNING KING & CO 1860-1934)

When Mom and Steve were detecting together, they found this under a tree (along with metal they dug up)

All in all it was a great day! We're all pooped from detecing from aprox. 10 am until 3:00pm.

Hot Windy Day made the Bell Ring Ding Ding

Waking up this morning to a kiss from Bob who wanted to go out and work on taking nails out of wood to burn in our fire place, I decided to snuggle back into bed for a nap. The wind was blowing hard outside and the temp. in the house was up; no not from the furnace, :o)

I slept for another hour and got up and made some yummy muffins for Bob and I to share with some cups of coffee. We were debating what to do and then I got on the phone with my mom and she wanted to come over and help metal detect. My cousin came over for a visit/give advice on some house things and finally after a while Mom and I started to detect -- we went back to the house ruins on the property.

Nail after nail after nail came up. The ground gave me "crappy" noises as I like to call it. Sweep one way and get a good signal, sweep again, nothing and then again nothing. Blah

We moved to the backyard under a tree and I got an overload sound. Mom started to dig and this is what we found:

Not sure what sort of bell it is, it was caked full of dirt, so I have it soaking now.

The items our yard has so far produced (that we feel are worth speaking about is) The Dress Clip, x2 1951 Pennies, an Army Service Button from the 1930's and a Spoon and now this bell. The rest of the items we have found basically melted metal, nails, screws, and unknown crap metal. Still hoping to find a 1800's coin as the property was first used in the 1800's -- we're currently doing research.

FINGERS CROSSED we are going out with Steve & Nadine (and Mom if she comes) to another location that Steve & Nadine obtained permission to detect on.

Woo, hear thunder, here comes the second wave of the storm, better turn the computer off. ;o)

Another Penny & A Silver Spoon 1800's?

Hey all!

Let's start with GOOD FRIDAY -- we called my mom up to see if she wanted to come over and help us detect our yard again and see what kind of goodies we could find. She was nice enough to bring over some Timmies and Muffins. We sat inside and had a great conversation and then headed outside. Bob had to go meet with some people about being in an upcoming movie/tv show? and Mom and I headed outside to detect. We played around by the ruins and didn't find anything except nails and then headed out to the backyard where we scored a nice 1951 penny. We played around some more and found more "garbage metal". It got really cold outside with the wind so after about an hour Mom decided she should head for home and I went inside to do some laundry. Bob came home shortly after and I headed back outside to try again and found more scrap metal. I then came across a "good signal" close to the house and found a pipe. Bob brought out the camera and took some photos.

Last night we decided to watch some video's on how to actually use the MXT properly. Whoops, I guess I didn't have it set correctly, so this morning we decided after running around in town and before we had to go back into town for dinner to meet up with Bob's family that we would detect for about an hour near the "Ruins". This time Bob used the detector and he scored this nice find -- a spoon that displays on the back Nevada McG. C. Co. -- which I tried looking up on the internet and only located a Fork that someone else had for sale who claims it is from the 1800's -- if that is actually true, then that would make sense since the rocks we found in the yard which we were told was from a house built in the 1800's before it burnt down in the 1900's.

The spoon was found approx. 4" - 5" under the dirt. It is the size of a Serving Spoon. It is discoloured and Bob tried cleaning it with toothpaste and an old toothbrush and did find some silver colour in one spot that cleaned up. It did ring up in the 80's on the detector which is a silver reading. We'll need to research it some more.

Hoping we can get out there tomorrow.

NOTE: received a message from Climac on the Canadian Metal Detecting message board stating that MCG might stand for"'McGlashan, Clarke & Co.', a manufacturer of silver plate in Niagara Falls, Ontario and Muncie, Indiana from 1837 to 1910"

LOST by one Penny! 03-21-09

After a shopping trip in the morning to Ikea we had made plans to meet Steve & Nadine at Steve's parent's property to do some metal detecting. Steve's family had owned a whole bunch of property including the site we were on for many many generations.






This was the original house on the site which was built in the early 1800's


This is the same house which was demo'd in 2006 as the property was sold and new houses were being built.

We had tried metal detecing there last year when nothing was on the property. SEE HERE


Steve's parents live on another section of the property that wasn't sold so they gave us permission to detect.

We split up and Bob and I headed towards some trees in a section that an old road had been prior to a second house being built on the property. Basically, all we found was junk, junk and more junk. Junk mental, nails and old container lids, etc... They were all found 2 - 3 " down.

We met back up with Steve & Nadine for a break as Bob was getting hungry.

Yes, they had found one penny. We had not found any money.

We split up again and located some bullet casings, but Bob said they weren't old. We then started detecting around a bar and located a very rusted licence plate that we couldn't read the date to. We headed towards the largest tree on the property and again found a bunch of garbage including the remains of an old toy truck.

It had been 4 1/2 hours and we regrouped. They still had no found any more money and we hadn't. Wow, we lost by a penny!

No worries, we had a lot of fun trying to find treasures. Not sure if Bob and I did pass up anything good as we are still trying to figure out our MXT.

We got home and I asked Bob if we could detect our yard as we had been told a house on the property was originally built in the 1800's and burned down. We were shown by the previous owner where the stones that it was built on were in the ground. We started detecting around there and it was so junky sounding, lots of clicks and blips. I finally had a solid hit, we dug and came up with black burnt wood (from the fire?!) along with some nails and a 1959 penny, all in the 4" range.

Bob was getting cold so he unloaded the car and I went into the back yard. Again lots of blips and clicks, but finally found another solid hit. It produced a file of some sort? I detected for a few more minutes and came up with some other odds and ends.

By now I was feeling very chilled. I decided to go in and we had a snack and watched A HAUNTING which Steve & Nadine had kindly recorded for us.
