Detecting Day - 03-14-09

After a busy day of shopping we decided to come home and use the metal detector.

Our new house which we moved into back in September 2008 is suppose to have history which we are trying to find out about.

Last year we found an old button that was found out to be a 1930's Army Service Button. We thought maybe we could find something else.

We started detecting the back yard and found a lot of scrap metal and nails. We then found another button on the other side of our fence -- but it was very rusty. Not sure what it was.

A familiar voice was heard, it was our Real Estate agent Terry Cox coming by for a quick visit. After he left we headed back out to detect some more before it became dark.

Again we hit our back yard. Half way down the yard we got a really good signal and Bob started to dig.

and dig

and dig some more

Bob seemed to find something that was approx. 2 - 2.5 feet down and rusty, it almost had a round shape. It was decided he would keep digging to find all four sides, his shovel all of a sudden sunk down on one side super easy. He moved to another side and the earth below his shovel disappeared and a hole opened up and we heard water splashing. We froze. What the heck did we find?
Looking down into the hole and looking around the back yard we tried to figure out exactly what we had stumbled on. Beside our house is a well, at the back of our house is a cistern, so what could this possibly be at the back of the yard.... maybe an old Outhouse Hole? Another well? We didn't really want to find out at this point. We were sort of scared that the ground might crumble below us. It was decided that Bob would place some rocks large enough to cover the hole and then fill it back in with the earth he had dug up until we could find out what the heck it was.

We moved on to the back back of that yard, closer to the train tracks and moved onto a vacant lot next door. A old house use to sit there prior to us moving into our house. We were told by neighbours the history was an older couple had lived there at some point, the husband died, then the wife died, someone bought the property to rebuild on but couldn't afford to at that time and rented out the house. The house was rented out to some people who couldn't care a less about the house and they were evicted after the house went into disrepair. The house was condemmed and torn down. The property seems to be used by other's in the neighbourhood -- kids building tree houses, used as an extra parking area, etc... why not try it before it gets dug up and a new place is built. We worked our way into the back of it first and found a lot of junk, an old doorknob set, wires, nails, etc... we found toys scattered around the yard, mostly ruined by a lawnmower running over it. It was decided we would move towards where the house use to sit as there was a large tree nearby -- there had to be something there!! We could picture young children maybe climbing it, playing around it, etc... nothing was found. I moved to the right of it and received an overload signal. Bob looked down and noticed it looked to be a place where a clothesline might had been put up -- PERFECT!!! I started scanning and we came up with a quarter and some pennies. We even found a weight from a barbell. It was now getting dark so we decided to head back to the house.

Once inside we had a message on our answering machine from Cousin's Steve & Nadine asking if we wanted to meet them for coffee and discuss a detecting day. Sounded great to us!!

Stay tuned for the next entry for March 15, 2009 :o) FINGERS CROSSED we find something awesome!!!!
