Our Once of Year Hunt of the Swimming Hole 08-23-2010
Well, it was that time of year again to take a day off work and head for a familiar swimming hole which brought us a lot of luck in the past. Last year, not so much since it was a cold and rainy summer. This year looked promising as we had a lot of hot days, surely it would pay off.
We got there nice and early, not another soul around. We quickly got started and a spot which normally paid off for us revealed NOTHING. Strange. We kept going along and nothing........... oh oh, I think someone else has been here before us. Finally, a nice sound coming through the headphones. We found a broken pair of sunglasses, bummer.
We kept going, found a penny here, a penny there.
Disappointing. As Bob went into deeper water I tought I'd play in the shallower water with the pinpointer. It started going off, it revealed a funky old earring full of stones. Bob called me over to him in deep water I couldn't stand in. Since he is over 6 feet tall, I just would swim down and do my digging while hanging on to his leg. We make a good team. The one hole produced a lot of change - nice!!
It started to get cold and after 2 hours Bob had to bail. I wanted to go over our hunt zone again and glad I did. I found a beatiful steel cross with a stone the middle.
So our final count was:
1 Steel Cross
1 small key
2 earrings (one hoop and one with stones)
1 pair of broken sunglasses (not shown)
$4.98 in change

A glass of Wine, Feeling Fine, time to Find some Treasures - 08-08-10
So, today was sort of a lazy day for us.
We woke up around 9am, had some breakfast, did some painting outside, went grocery shopping, had a late lunch including a glass of wine which made us very tired, called and talked to my mom on the phone and was just about to have a nap when the phone rang. It was cousin Steve wanting to know if we wanted to join in for an hour or two of detecting as the clouds outside were threatening rain. I suddenly jolted awake - YES YES YES, let's go!!
Off we went to a nearby school and Steve was on his own and Bob and I teamed up. Then the skies opened up. We retreated the cars and the downpour only lasted minutes and we decided to give it a try.
Here's Steve pinpointing a find.
Steve's total was $2.56.
He also found the remains of a watch that had obviously been run over by a lawnmower.
Our total was $3.86
We also found a key and a bracelet.
Upon further investigation there were markings on the inside of the bracelet, so I think it is safe to say it was Sterling Silver. It was approx. 3-4" deep, interesting it came up on the detector as a penny.

Civic Holiday = Pay Day! 08-02-2010
Today was a holiday Monday for us here in Ontario, Canada - Civic Holiday. My morning actually started off early, I was wide awake at 5am - EEEK!! So I got up and did some computer work until Bob woke up at 8:30am and after breakfast Bob played with his G-Scale Train and I painted up some Muskoka chairs and then it got hot, so we headed to Mom's pool for a dip, came home, had a 2-hour nap, got up had some supper and then it hit me, we had not metal detected in a looooooooooooooong time. I asked Bob to call up Cousin Steve and see what he was up to. His house always seemed to pay out nicely with older coins. Bob got Steve on the phone and he said we could come up.
Once we got there, Steve showed us a "cheaper" metal detector he had picked up and try out. No pinpointing feature, it didn't tell you how deep an item was and beeped at everything.
At first we found a bottle cap, a gun shell casing, a nail. Steve found some nails. I walked over to Steve and detected one of his holes to see what reading I was getting on something he got a solid hit on. The numbers came up negative and iron. I found a 70 reading nearby and marked it with a stick for him.
Steve and his find:
It ended up being a 1969 penny which appeared to have been used for target practice. Steve figures it was a handgun which was used on it. This penny was found near the side of the house about 2 inches down. He doesn't own one and no one in his family who lived in the house previously owned one. Very strange.
Bob and I had an awesome time hunting.
We first found bunch of firsts for us a 1899 Indian Head Penny, a 1918 US Dime, Canadian 1903 Penny, Canadian 1917 King George Nickel (such a cutie small thing). We also found what appears to be some sort of brooch or clip-on earring with a diamond looking stone in the center, 1951 US Penny, 1964 US penny, 1973 Canadian Penny, 1977 Canadian Penny and a 1982 Canadian Penny.
Close-up of the brooch or earring with the stone.
Close-up's of the front & backs of the older (first time finding) coins!
Overall, a totally excellent hunt and I think we only did hunt for 1 hour and 1/2.
We had been here before previously two or three times and have always found old unique items. We hope it keeps paying off for us, it is so fun searching Steve & Nadine's yard. :o)

Oh Deer, Only a 41 cent Day - That Won't Pay for Ice Cream
We had not been out in a while and I was eager to find some treasure. We jumped in the car and headed out to a school yard. It was cloudy & windy and there was a storm coming in from the West.
Unfortunately, we only found 41 cents, but we found this little guy watching us nearby. Bob quickly snapped some piccies.

42 cent day with Wendy, Jeff & Ian
It's been a long time since we have "hung out" with Wendy, Jeff & Ian - things always seemed to get in the way, work, hobbies, being sick. We decided this weekend we would meet up for an hour or two of metal detecting. Jeff had a location for us to try out which was an old location in Welland.
After a quick breakfast, we made a phone call to Wendy as to where we were meeting up and would follow them to this "awesome" location. Unfortunately as we travelled in a convoy to where the place was, it was packed full of people, not a good idea to detect when there are that many people around, so Jeff suggested a park nearby. We were eager to hit the ground since we have only been out basically once detecting this year.
Jeff & Wendy both have their own detectors, Bob and Iwould use ours (one would detect and one would dig) and Ian was going to play baseball, practice his hitting and throwing.
We were off. Bob and I started finding a lot of garbage but the detector's numbers were telling us it was good hits. Lots of pop cans and pull tabs. We decided to head to the playground equipment. NOTHING but a juice box. Had someone beat us to the park this year and cleaned it out?
After we were done in the playground equipment Jeff told us he was in the lead, he had found a penny. LOL
We headed over to the area's where people would eat, bad move, more pop cans, bottle caps, and pull tabs. I suggested we head to an open area as I could picture families playing ball, frisbee, etc... Ian begged Wendy to go and play baseball with him for a bit. She offered me her detector in case I wanted to detect myself, but I was quite happy digging for Bob. I was impressed with my hole digging. I was making perfect plugs which popped out and went back into the ground nicely, hardly noticable. Jeff headed out into a wooded area.
FINALLY Bob and I found a dime! Bob was a happy camper.

And it was a GOOD Friday!
Well, here we are in 2010 and on a holiday GOOD FRIDAY - April 2 and our weather was unbelievable!!! We were having record temp's of over 20 degrees Celsius. We called up Cousin Steve & his wife Nadine to see if they would like to detect for the first time this year up at their house since the times we have been there, we have done VERY well finding older coins. We were curious if the frost might of pushed up some more goodies.
We arrived shortly after 4:30pm and we chatted a bit in the backyard. Nadine was looking at the ground and found 10 cents Canadian and 25 cents Canadian laying right in the dirt. I looked down and spotted 5 cents Canadian. "Let's get hunting" Nadine yelled. We grabbed our detectors and headed for the front yard which has done well for us in the past.
The first hour and a half basically only gave up junky metal. We then found a small Canada Button type item, it had a rainbow looking Maple Leaf on it. Other than that find, this wasn't promising hunt.
Nadine asked if we wanted some pizza for dinner so she had Sheri put in a phone call to the local pizza place as they were going to pick it up.
I was very determined to find something, so as we were going back and forth in the front yard, I decided to bee-line straight for the front door of the house and we got a nice solid hit which registered 65 on the metal detector. Bob started to dig down 3 inches and a nice round coin and as Bob started to clean it off, it revealed a nice Canadian 1918 One Cent.
Woo hoo!! Let's keep going I yelled to Bob. Steve was off making a nice bonfire for us to sit around.
I got another nice hit closeby to where we found the One Cent and it revealed a tiny round metal token that says Play Coin Chicken Feed One Henny Penny. Steve says he remembers something about owning a game when he was little called Henny Penny. LOL
"Keep going" I said and we found a small metal Yellow Stop sign.
We stopped to eat some pizza around the fire and I suggested we all try in front of the house again and they were all game so we did.
We didn't find anything and I skipped across the driveway to an area that I remember when we were young visiting my aunt & uncle (who actually use to live there) had a fire pit set up. It was starting to get dark so I had to make sure I dug only good signals. We found like 3 pieces of junk and my final signal revealed another coin type item. It was less then 1 inch down. Nadine took it inside to see if she could clean it up. The coin was very worn but displayed the words one one side UN SOU Montreal and the other side Agriculture Commerce Bas-Canada. After we departed for home, Bob did some research on this coin and it appears to be dated around 1837!!!! I think that is our oldest coin to date!!! We were thrilled!!!!
Saturday morning we were off visiting Bob's parents and doing errands, later in the afternoon I decided to take the detector into our own backyard, it had not produced anything in the past except for an old service button, everything else was junk. Somehow today I found a penny & nickle.
I've got the detecting bug, I want to go out again soon. lol
Here is a photo of All the Finds for the past two days. :o)
