The nickel of DEATH!!!!

Back in December we were searching You Tube for interesting videos at Mary's brother's house and we found this video:

Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point Ohio that goes from 0 to 190km/h in less than 4 seconds sending you vertically 420 feet. We knew we had to go and ride this machine so wemade plans for 3rd week in August to go.

We drove to Windsor Ontario on Friday night after work and stayed for the night. Getting up early on Saturday we drove the remaining distance to Ohio to get to the park for after 10am. Waiting in line for 2 1/2 hours we were able to experience the 16 second ride on this awesome roller coaster.

Next we went to Millenium Force but being good metal detecters found a dime and penny on the asphalt.

While on the ride entering the tunnel for a second time, I noticed a shiny silver disc fly our the head of the passenger in front of Mary. I was going to point it out to her but the thunder tunnel was too loud to speak. After the ride, Mary picked a nickel out of our car that came lose during the ride narrowly missing the heads of the riders on the coaster.

To sum-up:
- We drove over 12 hours (there and back)
- Waited over 8 hours in line
- only was able to ride 5 roller coasters
- found less than 20cents

But it was all worth it

Rice Lake

Mary's uncle owns a cottage on Rice Lake. We had been looking forward to going on vacation all summer long. We both took 3 days off of work to give ourselves a 5 day weekend up north with Mary's parents and her nephew Dawson. We brought all our metal detecting gear as well as our fishing rods, bathing suits, GPS for Geocaching and my violin to annoy the neighbours.

We drove up on Friday night and first thing Saturday Mary wanted to scan the property for loose change but only found 2cents and some rusty nails.

Later that afternoon we took a boat ride across the lake to a beach. Dawson was excited to help Mary look for treasure. We told him about the underwater container and we had to be very secretive with our finds so other
beach-goers wouldn't try claiming our finds as their lost goodies. While scanning we had a double hit.
Dawson dove down and came up with a platinum ring with several clear stones shouting "RING!" as Mary rushed to hush him she knocked the ring out of his hand back into the deep. Giggling at his excitement we re-found the ring and were able to not bring any further attention to our find. But for the rest of our stay on the beach Dawson wanted to look at the R. I. N. G. again though we told him he'd have to wait until we got back on the boat to leave. The only other thing we found was a mechano wheel, Maybe somebody else already scanned that beach earlier.

Sunday we went to a different beach further across the lake. Scanning back and forth we only found a quarter, dime and a pennies (36cents) as well as almost 30 beer caps.

Monday Mary's parents took Dawson into town leaving Mary and me alone in the cabin. Instantly we knew what to do. What we had been yearning to do with each other if we ever had private time to ourselves. So we made sure the van had driven off and my car was out on the laneway. Then we began and started scanning where the vehicles used to be parked and found $2.63!!!

Tuesday we went back to the beach further across the lake. While I got in some fishing with dad, Mary found $4.58 comprising of a toonie, a loonie, 3 quarters, 5 dimes, 4 nickles 8 pennies and a can opener.

We drove back on Wednesday after a fantastic vacation away adding $7.59 and a ring to our treasures.

Early Sunday

We decided to get up after 6am and hit the beach again before the swimmers got out. Unfortunately we didn't get there before the metal detectors wake up. There was already one in the water and one on the beach. Undaunted we search but Mary found nothing and I only found scrap metal. There was a secret beach we had just heard about so we headed over there. I found lots of scrap metal but Mary found nothing again. I guess scanning beaches isn't paying off for us quite yet.

Earlier in the week we had dinner with some friends. Colin and Sherry knew how much Mary wanted to find a high school football ring so Colin slipped me a ring under the table telling me to surprise Mary with it. Mary knows Colin gave me something or said something to me but neither one of us would reveal what had transpired.
We went to a couple nearby schools. I was detecting and Mary was taunting me that I had to beat her record from yesterday. While she was playing on the swing set I slipped the high school ring in a hole and told her I was tired and for her to detect for a bit. When she found the ring she was so excited but I had to tell her the truth of where it came from.

As she helped me detect we found: 1 Loonie, 3 quarters, 6 dimes, 3 nickles, and 25 pennies giving me a total of $3.75. O.k. I didn't quite beat her total.
I have retired the old mason Jar and have started a new jar for the coins we have found in August. Our new Mason Jar Total (MJT) is $11.51

Reeling in the big money

It is hot and dry.

We have been experiencing this heatwave for a couple of weeks now.
When we visited Mary's parents in the middle of the week her dad mentioned that we didn't fill the hole we dug by their shed. We assured him that we ALWAYS fill our holes. But when we checked the dirt was scattered like ashes across the lawn. Some animal must of took advantage of the break in the rock hard ground that we created. I told Mary that we have to stop digging lawns until we get some rain top soften things up.

We woke up late this morning. Neither one of us wanted to leave the bed (We have a new fabric softener that smells like lavender). Squeak the cat took a nap on the bed and now he smells like lavender too.
I thought we should scan beaches today but with it being a sunny long weekend it would be really crowded down there.

Instead we decided to scan public schools. We hit a couple schools in the north end but only came up with a couple zipper pulls and a token from the ROM. Mary was feeling the heat so we took a break and when to Tim Hortons. Feeling refreshed I felt like trying my new fishing rod but Mary wanted to re-scan a nearby school. I put just a weight on my rod and cast into the playground while Mary metal detected by herself. We were both happy, but, she caught more than I did.

She found: 2 toonie, 2 loonies, 5 quarters, 2 dimes, 1 nickles and 14 pennies give her a total $7.64. (the greatest total ever and a school we had already scaned weeks earlier)
After dinner we went out again to the beach. Mary scanned the shore and I went into the water useing detects at the same time. I found bits of scrap iron and Mary found 12 cents with one penny being from 1932. (Our oldest coin yet!!!) This was a bestest day ever for Mary. I'm sure her head was full of happy thoughts of finding metal as she went to bed.
